Album UK 2014 on Nondo label
Jazz (Avant-garde Jazz)
Personnel: Terry Parkinson - trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion: Andy Peate - trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, percussion: David Panton - clarinet, alto saxophone, piano, spoken voice, percussion; Bob Jackson - tenor saxophone, percussion; Bob Boucher - double bass, percussion; Gary Randall - drums; Jef Daw, Bob Wilson, Stewart Johnson - spoken voices (track 5 only) These tracks by a sextet version of One Music Ensemble were originally released as two separate items: Nondo FMC1 To Absent Friends, and Nondo FMC4 To Absent Friedns Too. They were edited in such a way as to over both sides of two C46 audio cassettes, thus leaving open the possibility of them being released as vinyl LPs. This meant that the longest track, Burnt Carrots, was rearranged into two shorter ones: the written themes, bass solo and trumpet obligato, were spliced together with voice extracts and sound effects into a sound collage under the original title; the solos section in its entirety was renamed Elas Pour Jef, J'en Sais Bien (Alas for Jef, I knew him well), a reference to the piece having been written for friend and musical colleague Jef Daw who died aged just 40 in August 1981 while on holiday with his partner and friends in Brittany where he is buried in a local churchyard. The other tracks also reflected the theme of absence in one sense or another including a standard (You Must Remember This) not included here. The original version of Burnt Carrots is reproduced here in its full 29 minutes. Threnody was written in the mid 70s when the Troubles in Northern Ireland spilled over into mainland Britain and the IRA launched a series of bomb attacks aimed at civilian targets, including the Birmingham pub bombings. Elegy for ED was written on the death of my mother in January 1978, but for some, given the avant-garde nature of the music, there may be more of an association with the late Eric Dolphy. Nii Noi is different in that Nii Noi Nortey was an absent friend due to his having returned home to Ghana for an extended visit to catch up with friends and family. Have You Finished ? is what's left of the cassette release version of Burnt Carrots namely the sound effects, out-takes/extracts of music and spoken voices including of Jef himself asking '......have you finished?' Skarth Recording, Birmingham 29 September 1981 plus additional remixing/recording at Arc Studios, Birmingham. Engineers: Frank Skarth and Bob Wilson. All works by Panton published by D & ED Panton Music (c) (p) 1981 & 2014. Further information: http://www.pantonmusic.com
