Letargo (lethargy) is a sound piece that consists of five fragments of field recordings captured in the amazon jungle on July of 2015 in Brazil and Colombia. The material was recorded in locations close to creeks and ponds during different times of the day/night centering on sounds produced by birds, monkeys and frogs. Each fragment was equalized individually in order to focus on the sonorities produced by some of these animals. On this trip to the amazon forest – my second in four years - my goal was to go as deep in the jungle as possible during a two-week span. I was looking for places isolated from human presence and from sound pollution but in this process I was also trying to separate myself from my routine and urban habitat entering an unnatural and potentially unwelcoming environment where most of my knowledge and skills were going to be useless and even counter-productive. To get to the locations where these sounds were recorded, a small crew and I needed to take very long hikes through muddy footpaths and blocked routes. After a few hours walking through these slim intricate paths, one begins to feel inside an endless shady tunnel filled with dense hot and humid air, a scenario that can mess up the mind and wear down the body as well. At certain points of these walks I felt lethargic, dazzled and annoyed, the jungle became an obstacle as if I had to put up a fight in order to get to the virgin post-apocalyptic places whose sonorities I wanted to capture. But I wasn't really battling the jungle, I was actually battling me... the jungle never realized of my presence and it was this indifference what overwhelmed so much.
