JUST FOR THE RECORD VOLUME FOUR was released 3 years ahead of the other volumes in the JUST FOR THE RECORD series, primarily because Jones was excited about the content. Unlike the other volumes in the JFTR series, VOLUME FOUR consistent of freshly-made recordings (recorded from 1992 to 1995). His goal was to showcase himself as a singer-songwriter while quoting styles (techno-pop, Motown, blues, country, AC rock, progressive rock) beyond the bubblegum pop he was commonly associated with. He hired producer/musician Johnny J. Blair for most of the work, with technical support from John Bechdel (Fear Factory, Ministry) and Grammy-winning engineer Rusty Richards. All of the songs were newly-created compositions, excluding "You And I" (remake of a 1976 Boyce Hart Dolenz Jones track), "If I Knew" (remake of a 1969 Monkees track), and "I'll Love You Forever" (remake of a 1986 Monkees track). Two of the tracks were from concerts, recorded in 1992 with his road band. In 1999 and 2004, Jones used some of the JFTR4 material (remixing or re-recording) for his JUSTME albums. The Monkees covered "It's Not Too Late" and "What A Night" on their 1996 JUSTUS album. Other tracks were reissued in 2011 for his WILD PONIES download album series. Remaining tracks are unreleased and unavailable. JUST FOR THE RECORD is a career-retrospective, created and assembled by Davy Jones with Johnny J. Blair. The 4-CD series provides an overview of his accomplishments in show business from 1960-94 (each volume was released separately on cassette and CD, then released in 1999 in a limited edition box set). There is some overlap with his high-profile times in The Monkees, but most of the material emphasizes his theatre work and his solo career, including original music created and released especially for this project.
