The Dekkerband is a Dutch band and early was founded around 1979/80 and is mainly formed by four brothers with the family nickname Dekker: Klaas, Cor, Bep and Andre Veerman. At the head of the musical Dekker family stood Thoom Veerman (1910-1974) who was in possession of a trumpet, clarinet, three saxophones and an accordion. He himself played all these instruments and taught all his thirteen children the principles on one or a few of these instruments. The initiative for De Dekkerband came from Klaas and Cor Veerman. Musicians of the first hour are Jaap Sombroek (Lead), Jaap Bond (Drum) and Jack Veerman (Jozef); the latter is not a brother of the other Veermans and previously played as a guitarist with Fools (2). Sombroek joined the band as a drummer, because a fifth brother, Jack Veerman, had too little time due to his participation in BZN; already this Dekker has played for De Dekkerband. Jaap Bond left the band quite quickly and made room for Theo van Scherpenseel who used to play with Jen Rog and next to it, introducing Specs Hildebrand & The Living Room Band. Van Scherpenseel first had to learn to read notes before he could join. Together with Cor Veerman he then wrote the wind arrangements under the music.
