THOMAS DECATUR JONES 1953-1999 Thomas Decatur Jones (Decatur Jones) was born in Durham, North Carolina in 1953. Decatur grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and began playing music at an early age. He bought his first guitar, a Silverstone, and played The House of the Rising Sun at a Junior High School talent show and never stopped from there. Decatur attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his Bachelor of Performing Arts from the School of Music. He then went on to receive his Masters in Music at the University of Miami. Decatur wrote all of his own music and played many instruments, including the piano, banjo, drums, harmonica, 12 string guitar, and bass. While in Chapel Hill, Decator played at The Cat’s Cradle and many other music establishments in and around Chapel Hill through the 1970’s and 80’s. He then went on to play not just in the Miami area, but all over the South Eastern United States. Additionally, he played in New York City. His CD was made in New York and he played quite a bit in Greenwich Village while there. In 1993, Decatur moved to Durango, Colorado where he continued his passion for playing music. Unfortunately, Decatur passed away suddenly in November of 1999 while still living in Durango, Colorado.
