Diane Young

Band,

Diane Young (today known as Perpendicular Columns Of Rock) plays original songs that covers the genres of rock, hard rock, psychedelic rock, Indie rock and touches of funk. Diane Young was formed in 1996 at Newman College, University of Melbourne. In its early stages, Diane Young was a covers band that played hard rock, psychedelic rock and grunge music. Between 1996 and 1998, Diane Young gradually transitioned from a covers band to playing original material. Highlights during the period include playing its first gig on 11 April 1997 at Newman College, winning the University of Melbourne's college band competition at the Red Back Brewery in 1998 and recording its debut EP at the School of Audio Engineering in St Kilda, Melbourne. Diane Young commenced recording its debut LP at Birdland Studios in August 1999, being the first band to record in the then recently constructed drum room. Over the course of the next 12 months (and in between recording sessions of Area 7), Diane Young recorded 17 tracks in completing the album that would be released in 2001 known as Catharsis. Other highlights during this period include playing in North Melbourne at the Metropolitan Hotel, the Arthouse Hotel and an open air millennium concert where an apartment balcony was used as the stage. 2001 to 2004 was the most prolific period of Diane Young's career. Gigs were regular and included venues such as the Tote in Collingwood, the Evelyn in Fitzroy, the 303 Bar in Northcote, the Sugar Suite in the Melbourne CBD, the Railway Hotel in Brunswick, Dream Nightclub in Parkville, the Anglesea Hotel, and the Coopers Inn in the Melbourne CBD. During this period, eight songs were written and regularly performed live before being recorded at Toyland Studios in July 2004. The completion of the recording sessions marked the end of this period, with overseas travel and non-music career opportunities of various band members ushering in a hiatus. A highlight during this period was coming third in the University of Melbourne's band competition in 2003. The 18 months commencing from the start of 2006 was the most creative period for Diane Young. Temporarily rehearsing as a three-piece band while the lead guitarist was away traveling the Americas, new material started to be jammed out. By the end of 2006, the band had fully reunited, changed its name to Perpendicular Columns Of Rock, and fleshed out 15 new songs over the next six months. The band recorded these songs at Eastern Bloc studios in May 2007 and Toyland Studios in July 2007. The end of this period was marked by a one-off gig at the 303 Bar in August 2007 to commemorate Hearing Awareness Week. From this point-in-time, family life and non-music careers has meant the band is less active. The band has continued to work and complete recordings - the 2004 Toyland sessions revised and released in 2013, and the 2007 sessions are close to release. With the improvement of technology, the band has recorded several new songs using home studios since 2013. The band has performed twice in the ensuing years - at the Empress Hotel in Fitzroy North around Christmas 2011 and at the Epic Lake music festival held on Lake Eppalock in March 2018.
