Holland-born New Zealand violin & flute player. Profile from A Labour Of Love: Born in Holland, Dick began studying the violin at the age of nine and gave his first public recital at twelve. He became interested in jazz in his late teens and joined a band when he left the army. At this stage, he began playing the flute and studied the instrument classically. Dick moved to New Zealand in his early twenties and continued studying both the violin and flute. Recorded baroque recitals for the National Programme. In 1967, he played with the Blue Note Quartet and the next year the quartet was the his of the Tauranga National Festival. In 1969 he moved to Auckland. A Foundation Member of Tommy Adderley's super group Headband, then formed Borkum Riff, reviving an association with drummer John Berryman (3) that began with Blue Note in Dunedin. Borkum Riff played concerts broadcasts, toured and appeared on record. After 18 months Dick took a break from playing publicly and retreated into a cave, to emerge only infrequently until now.
