Dik started out in music as a member of The Hype with his brother David, now better known as The Edge. Dik left the group before it became U2 and became a founding member of Virgin Prunes, which he left in 1984. In 1988 he played on one track on the first album by The Prunes. In the same year, he played guitar for a short time in The Kid Sisters (later known as The Screech Owls) with singer/guitarist Debbie Skhow. He later played on one track on Stano's "Only" album.
