'Melbourne Seven piece funk, ska, reggae band The Dili AlIstars faced a major dilemma. What could ever top being Australia’s official representative at East Timor’s Massive independence concert in May 2002 after a decade fighting for such an event? The Dili Allstars have cone up with the answer. A three-week tour of Portugal sponsored by that country’s Communist Party . The band were officially chosen by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP ) to appear at the massive Avante Festival in September 2003 due to their long time social and political activities on behalf ofthe East Timorese people . The fact that the band are noted for their good time high energy live shows also helped as well. "This tour is a major deal for us" said Dili Allstars founder Gil Santos. A lot of Timorese escaped to Portugal after the Indonesian invasion in 1975 . We will be the first ever Australian / East Timorese band to go back to Portugal to play the country of our former colonial rulers. "The Avante Festival is a massive event. We are all thrilled. It is a dream come true because a lot of us went as young kids to this event never dreaming that one day we would end up playing there “ The Dili Allstars with help from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and East Timorese President Xanana Gusmao will also appear at several concerts organised by the Australian Embassy and The East Timorese Embassy in Portugal. To coincide with their tour the band have cone up with an exclusive Portuguese album release 'Peace and Unity’.
