A.k.a. Stewart Fischer
Stewart Roussin Fischer, better known as “Dirk” Fischer, was a noted composer, arranger, trumpeter, valve trombonist. Born Sept. 1, 1924 in Durand, Mich., Fischer picked up the trumpet and saxophone at age 13, about the same time he picked up the nickname “Dirk” from his piano-playing mother (his father played banjo). Fischer died February 25, 2013 in Valencia, CA. Fischer was was named the first head of the College of the Canyons Jazz Studies in 1977, and was the head of the Jazz Department for more than 28 years.
