A.k.a. Mark Masters
Dj Mastas is a self taught, multi-genre, Dj & Producer from Herefordshire in the UK. Primarily based within the Drum & Bass genre, although hugely influenced by classic Hip Hop, Dance music & the Old Skool Rave scene, Dj Mastas style is consistently changing & evolving between each & every track he creates. Growing up in and around the music industry due to his father being the drummer in various, successful, R&B bands, it wasn’t long before Mark (Dj Mastas) was infected with the rhythm & a life long passion for music was born. His first experience of music production was trying to loop breakbeats around the tender age of 10 using nothing but a cassette player & a turntable. Luckily for him a few years later he managed to pick up a copy of Cool Edit ’96 and began creating original tracks by sampling everything and anything he could get his hands on & making drum patterns using drum samples & a calculator to work out their placement in the loops. It was also around this time he got his first set of turntables & taught himself how to mix, years before they joy of YouTube or any sort of tutorial videos or guides. From that point onwards he continued to upgrade both his equipment & skill set, playing at local venues & house parties & improving his production techniques across both hardware & software. In approx 2005 Dj Mastas began uploading his tracks & remixes to YouTube and was surprised that although he never really took his productions seriously the response he got was phenomenal. Later, at the advice of a friend, he created a SoundCloud page & again was blown away by the response he received, accumulating over 2000 followers & never actually releasing a track through a record label. This all changed in 2014 when after a series of minor labels approaching him, he was asked by Clawhammer Recordz if he would be interested in signing a remix he did of “DROP IT” by an artist called Pest, already signed to Clawhammer. He agreed, and in 2015 his remix reached the Top 10 of Juno’s download chart in its first week of release & was the best selling track on the 5 track EP. Meanwhile, he was contacted by Flex Records who also discovered him via SoundCloud and asked if he would be interested in the possibility of being 1 of the artists to relaunch the label for 2015. Already familiar with the label & with huge respect for L Double & the rest of the Flex family, he agreed in an instant.
