Soviet photojournalist Dmitri Baltermants (1912-1990), born in Warsaw, Poland, turned from an education in mathematics to photography to become a leading photojournalist and correspondent for "Izvestia" (the Communist Party newspaper), photographed the battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, as well as the liberation of Poland.
