Dorothy Jackson was born on October 18, 1928 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She started playing the piano when she was five years old and was a natural talent. She grew up singing and playing in church in Pine Bluff. As a child, she learned many of the old time spirituals from her relatives and friends, while working in the cotton fields. She later moved to Kansas City, Missouri and released a Southern Gospel album Old Time Spirituals with her husband George Jackson (8).
