Album UK 1933 on Oriole label
Jazz
Recorded 14 July 1933 at an unidentified location in London this is an Duke Ellington interview with Percy Mathison Brooks the editor of The Melody Maker. This is the Levy's/Oriole single sided 10" unnumbered disc - Souvenir of Duke Ellington's First Visit To England 1933 The commemorative record was given to customers of Levy's Record Shop in London when they purchased 6 Ellington records - some say 12 records. Given that it was at the height of The Depression not a great many were given away, the record consists of an interview with Duke during which he answers questions and plays the piano. He signed the wax master and his signature therefore appears etched across the bottom of the label. The Levy's/Oriole trademark backing plate design embossed into the wax.
