Album UK 1981 on DUNAV label
Folk (Folk)
The Dunav Balkan Group was formed in the early Sixties by a number of musicians interested in bringing to a wider audience the folk music and dances of south-eastern Europe. "Dunav" means "Danube" in some Balkan languages. Dunav's repertoire is drawn from the living traditions of Balkan folk music, and the items on this album show something of the richness of those traditions. There are slow, haunting melodies, for example, the beginnings of Kitka and Okarino kolo, contrasting with bouncy tunes such as Moravac and Žikino, and there are many very fast passages as in Ručenica and the finale Kitka suite. John Baldwin - tamburitsa, tambura Brian Dowsett - guitar David Johnson - clarinet, ocarina, string bass Narendra Kotiyan - tapan, tarabuka, string bass, tamburitsa Caroline Thomas - piano accordion, guitar David Wells - violin, cimbalom, string bass Lilijana Zobens - singer First published by Dunav Balkan Group 1981.
