Elizabeth Hirst

Liz Hirst is a New Zealand flutist. She attended Epsom Girls Grammar School in Auckland where composer David Hamilton (23) taught and mentored her, inspiring to explore the realms of new music. Elizabeth studied flute with Uwe Grodd at the University of Auckland. In 1988, Hirst became a finalist at the Young Musicians Competition where she performed Carl Nielsen's Concerto with The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Liz also won Gisborne Chamber Music Competition (1989) and shared the first prize with oboist Robert Orr (2) at Christchurch Concerto Competition in 1990. Hirst moved to Germany in 1992 and began working on her soloist's diploma with Robert Aitken (2) in Freiburg. She collaborated with Ensemble SurPlus and Ensemble Aventure (including concerts in Korea and Argentina) and joined the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. After the graduation, Liz Hirst continued training under Peter Eötvös in Cologne and Carin Levine in Darmstadt. Since the early 2000s, Hirst has been working closely with MusikFabrik: performing throughout Europe and the United States with Peter Rundel, Enno Poppe, Emilio Pomárico and other prominent conductors, working with composers like Helmut Lachenmann or Louis Andriessen. Liz participated in the world premieres of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Sonntag aus Licht and Klang cycle, as well as Mauricio Kagel's In der Matratzengruft. She was a founding member of Ensemble Anprall in Freiburg (from 2007 to 2012) and joined Ensemble Garage in 2010.
