The Druzhba route, named after the Russian word Дружба for "friendship", was the 550-kilometer section of the total 2,750 kilometer natural gas pipeline "Soyuz". The "route" was built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as the central youth object of the Free German Youth (FDJ) from 1974 to 1978. The length of the GDR section was 518 kilometers. It was built in several stages over decades.
