Electromagnetic Field Recordings

Album IT 2013 on Toxic Industries label
Spoken Word (Field Recording, Technical)

Abstract: An Electro-Magnetic field is the combination of an electric field (difference of voltage) and a magnetic field (flow of electrical current). EMFs are areas of energy that surround electrical devices such as power lines, electrical wiring and various appliances. Some people worry about EMF exposure and cancer. A few studies found a link between EMF exposure and a higher risk of childhood leukaemia, but the link is weak. Other studies didn't find a link between EMF exposure and other childhood cancers. These recordings want to make listenable something that normally is invisible and unhearable, but constantly present. This is not something pro or against EMF, just a cold noisy and static high-textured audio document of the environment. Listeners will reach the conclusions by themselves. Equipment: - a DIY antenna for VLF, 80 meters coil wrapped around 90x90 cm wooden frame; - digital recorder, Olympus LS-10. Description: Sounds are captured by "immersing" the antenna into an electromagnetic field that causes a current on the wire. By amplifying that electrical wave, it's possible to hear part the EMF. The recording it's not made with high-professional instruments, but it's sharp in order to understand what is hidden in the environment. The documentation is divided into four parts, taken in four different location, from the furthest to the nearest from the city. All recordings were taken on the 9th May 2010 in Vicenza Province, Veneto, Italy by Fabrizio De Bon. Details on track: 1. taken close to an isolated cellphone antenna in the countryside of Romano D'Ezzelino, approximately 20 meters high. 2. taken under an electrical pylon in the hills of Valrovina, about 40 meters distant from the source. 3. taken close an electrical pylon in Marchesane, near some houses and mid-attended roads. 4. taken in front of the fence of the power plant in Bassano del Grappa, centre of the city. Release comes in special package: handmade wooden digipak painted in grey with a small replica of the original antenna glued on the front, a booklet and a CDr painted in black.
