Father Sydney MacEwan
Songs Of The Gael

Single UK 2011 on Piccadilly label
Folk (Folk)

Father Sydney MacEwan was born in Glasgow on October 9th, 1909, into a musical family: his father and his brother being good amateur pianists, while Sydney himself used to play the violin. Graduating from St. Aloysius Jesuit college at Garnet Hill, Glasgow, in 1927, he took a Master Of Arts degree at the university at Glasgow, and became part of many of the university shows. It was at the university that he met Sir Compton Mackenzie who was the Lord Rector at that time, and Sir Compton advised him that the great Irish tenor John McCormack should hear his voice. This audition was the beginning of a long and successful career as a singer at the Folk Airs of Scotland and Ireland. In 1938 came the news which startled the musical world; Sydney MacEwan was abandoning his career as a singer to study for the priesthood, and he was ordained in St. Andrews' Cathedral in Glasgow in 1944. It was not until 1947 that he began singing on the concert platform again. Produced by Pye Records (sales) LTD. A.T.V. House, Gt. Cumberland Place. London, W. 1. Printed in England by West Brothers Printers Limited, Mitcham
