A.k.a. Fadali Mohd Darif
Synthesising elements of hip-hop, rap and even jazz in his musical works, this Singaporean rapper is finding success in Malaysia with his debut solo album Muka Surat Satu (Page One in Malay). Fadali Mohd Darif, affectionately known as Daly, is more than just a rapper – his stage name Filsuf means “philosopher” in Indonesian. In his early musical career, he explored his musicality as part of the group Ahlifiqir, but he now flies solo under his new stage name Daly Filsuf. Passionately delivered in his mother tongue, Malay, his songs are catchy and his musical styling fresh. He composes his songs and lyrics spontaneously, following the rhythm of the music he writes. “I highlight satire and sarcasm through idioms and popular slang. When composing lyrics, I take ideas from my visual experiences or simple conversations from my surroundings,” he explained. Contemplating social topics in his songs, he deplores what he calls an “over-proud” society and hypocrisy in modern urban society. His interests in hip-hop and rap – genres which he finds represents reality – started in the mid 90s, with Jay Z and Eminem as his role models. He nevertheless enjoys all music genres and often collaborates with other artists to explore new frontiers of his chosen art form. As for his aspirations, he hopes that hip-hop and rap will be more popular in the future. Despite hip-hop trends seemingly coming and going in the blink of an eye among Malaysian youth, he is hopeful about the impact of the growing number of breakthrough artists and amount of enthusiasm. As part of the hip-hop community, he hopes that his rhythms and critical lyrics can find an enduring place in this music genre.
