Almost every famous rock band have compitaion(s) of best, remixed and unreleased material these days. But there’s some one-off or studio projects who don’t have ones. International project Forces United is a strict exception from this rule, and its fifth release Power Subunit is a compilation of very special kind. Forces United was formed Spring 2013 in Moscow by Kirill Nemolyaev, frontman and mastermind of controversial Boney NEM pseudo-cover band together with his colleagues from Factor Strakha, and SLOT. All four Forces United releases from 2014–2015 became fruits of work of experimental music laboratory, dare we say. And all four albums represented very interesting and diverse ideas of the best Russian rock instrumentаlists. Moreover, these albums became true rare birds of the style: there was a mixing pot of substyles, including melodic metal, power metal and modern metal with excursion as far as death metal and what you may call “heavy disco”! Such a variety of styles and wishes for the best quality of recordings lead to decision to work with the most interesting vocalists in the heavy metal world of today. So John West, Mark Boals, Göran Edman and Jarkko Ahola became members of Forces United vocal team. As we said, previous Forces United albums were the works of great stylistic diversity, but the new one is very, very straight: nothing except melodic metal and power metal, hence the name — Power Subunit. This is melodic metal album with three new exclusive tracks, while the other ones represented totally new and far more conservative metal versions of tracks from Forces United I–IV albums. On every level Power Subunit give you a chance to hear and taste highly original ideas of international rock team. Bonus track of Power Subunit is the original version of “If You Are Happy” (from first Forces United album, 2014) which became greatest Internet hit of this project. It can be said that Power Subunit is not only a full presentation of Forces United body of work. Far more interesting, it shows how melodic and power metal easily can be combined with modern production and clear mainstream sound. This fusion of metal tradition and modern age production is a good reason for a placing of Power Subunit in your collection.
