German classical bass/baritone vocalist and educator, 1932 to 2010. Since 1963 he was professor at the Hochschule für Musik Köln, in 1976 he became director of that institution, a position he held until 1997. From 1988 to 2003 he also was president of the Deutscher Musikrat.
