Album US 2010 on Sound-O-Mat label
Electronic (Ambient)
© Copyright - Freq. Magnet / The Sound-O-Mat (183219099055) Nicked is the third CD by Freq. Magnet (pronounced "freak magnet"), an Austere solo side-project focused on guitar-only instrumental, ambient musick, enhanced by far, far too many guitar pedals, several loopers and as always, Space Echo. This release also includes bass, piano, bells, field recordings, and other odd instruments to create psychedelic, "zone-out ambient mindgaze musick." Many of the tracks eschew heavy processing seen on past releases, with a specific set of guitar pedals used. Originally planned as a CD of "borrowed samples made irrecognizable", the three year process to completion lead down different paths of experimentation with guitar effects and looping, all recorded directly, resulting in complex, multi-layered, often dense tracks that border somewhere between "ambient" and "rock" while rarely stepping entirely into either genre; bending, leaning, changing, but never standing in one place for too long. As diverse as it is cohesive, individual tracks blend from one to the next, each anchored by a repeating "base" that continues over each track and creates a bridge to guide from one track to the next. This CD is best seen as two sides of an LP, six tracks per side, two different styles each. Songs on "side one" are based on simple three- and four-note phrases and chords, textured and layered, minimal and spacious, full of glitches, all for shorter pieces of trance-inducing musick. Blissed-out, serene, gentle, all with minute detail; inspried by Bark Psychosis' "Hex" album. It is musick "designed to be listened to between 1:19 and 3:37 am" as SandSpider put it in 1999 on their self-titled album. The second "side" turns into longer tracks ala early Labradford and Windy & Carl but branching out on very different directions. "Side two" has a strong bent towards shoegaze sans vocals, short bursts of heavy guitar freak-out, and closes with full-on psyche-rock cover featuring the long-running Portland, Oregon band King Black Acid.
