Georgie Cooper born: October 30, 1929. Greenville, MS. died: August 5, 2008. La Habra, CA. Georgie Cooper was a pianist, organist, and choral director. Most notably she accompanied singers in the William Hall Master Chorale in and the Chorale Belle Canto Singers. She also accompanied numerous professional instrumentalists from the Pasadena and Orange County Symphonies (Southen California). She was a long time organist and musical director at St. Stephens Church (La Habra, CA) and Hillcrest Congregational Church (Whittier, CA). For many years (starting in the late 1950s) she worked freelance in Southern California as a pianist/organist due to her highly accomplished sight reading skills. She first started on piano when she was 8 years old and learned how to play the organ in her teens at St. James Episcopal Chuch in Greenville, Mississippi. She worked as pianist with saxophonists Buck Maneri and Sam Butera in her late teens and her early twenties. She studied at Mississippi Women's College and the University of Mississippi before transfering to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where she would study with well known pianist and music theorist William S. Newman. She would later earn a degree from California State University, Fullerton. She taught English language and was a choral director in the Brea-Olinda District for over 25 years, she would later hold a teaching position at Whittier College in the 1990s: she was named Teacher of the Year for Brea-Olinda twice. Composer, arranger, instrumentalist Jack Cooper is her son and stylist/artist Cathy Cooper is her daughter. Her oldest daughter Sarah is an accomplished pianist and singer and her youngest son Michael played the trumpet and French Horn; he currently works for as head of software for Direct T.V. in Southern California.
