From back cover: On October 4, 1982 Canada lost one of her most gifted musicians: pianist Glenn Gould died of a brain haemorrhage. He was 50. Gould's career was from the very beginning closely associated with the gramophone record and in this regard one of the first organizations with which he was involved was Radio Canada International. In 1954, at the age of 22, he recorded for RCI Bach's PARTITA No. 5 in G major and the FANTASY by Canadian composer Oskar Morawetz. This was followed in 1957 by the QUINTET IN F MINOR OP. 34 by Brahms, with the Montreal String Quartet. Glenn Gould's name also appears in the RCI catalogue as a composer: his STRING QUARTET OP. 1 was recorded in 1956 by the Montreal Quartet, shortly after its premiere performance on the CBC French network radio program PREMIERES. The work - written in one movement - was composed between 1953 and 1955. Romantic in mood yet disciplined in its writing, the work marked a stage in Gould's development as a musician and always retained for him a sentimental value. As a tribute to Glenn Gould, pianist and composer, Radio Canada International, in collaboration with Canada's Department of External Affairs, has assembled three of these now historic recordings which were produced by RCI: the PARTITA No. 5 by Bach, the Brahms QUINTET and Gould's QUARTET. May the serve to honour the memory of a musician whom Canada rightly considers one of her most illustrious sons.
