Excerpts from the autobiography, read by the author. "Gordon Park's first novel, The Learning Tree, was published in 1963. It is a fictional re-creation of his own growing up in Fort Scott, Kansas. The story spans three years in the life of Newt Winger‒from a storm that nearly wrecks the town when he was twelve, through his mother's death when he was fifteen. The plot centers on Newt's conflicts with Marcus Savage, another black boy of his age, and a dramatic murder trial which Newt resolves by his testimony... In 1969, the movie version of "The Learning Tree" was released by Warner Brothers. Written, directed, and photographed by Mr. Parks himself in the town where he grew up. Shortly after the movie, Mr. Parks agreed to record excerpts from The Learning Tree for Scholastic."
