of Hip-Hop/Rap
A.k.a. Jamal Woolard
Following in the successful footsteps of 50 Cent, Fabolous, Lil' Flip and Cassidy, up and coming rapper-songwriter Gravy, also earned his street credibility prior to inking a major label deal. Born and raised in Brooklyn's LG (Lafayette Gardens) projects, Gravy earned his stripes as a street MC on the same BedStuy battlegrounds as hip hop icons, the late Notorious B.I.G. and Jay Z. After years of honing his skills, Gravy hooked up with Fendi, CEO of production company Dirty Money Records, and had a brief stint in a group with Red Café and Q Da Kid, before pursuing a solo career. Gravy received his first big break as a songwriter back in 2000 when Sean "Puffy" Combs heard him freestyling on DJ Clue's live Monday night show on New York's famed Hot 97. Immediately thereafter, Gravy helped to pen the Grammy Award Winning "Pass The Courvoisier," and went on to work with such prominent hip hop artists as Busta Rhymes, Foxy Brown, Lil' Flip, Fat Joe and Jewelz Santana, among others. It wasn't long before street, underground and radio DJs started pushing Gravy heavily on the mixtape and mixshow circuit. The buzz eventually became undeniable as Gravy captured the attention of 50 Cent, Jay-Z and executives from Atlantic, Universal and Capitol Records. In the end, it was with Kevin Liles and Warner Music Group that Gravy found a home.
