Artist Portrait

Guila Bustabo

vn, 1916-2002 US, Manitowoc, Wisconsin
Musician of Classical

Violinist. Born Manitowoc, WI, 25 Feb. 1916; died Birmingham, AL, 27 Apr. 2002. Started her career as a child prodigy pushed by her (tor)mentoring mother. Carnegie Hall debut at age 15 was followed by international touring. Her postwar career was ruined by her mother's decision to stay and work in Nazi Germany. Despite denazification in Paris, she never gained back her reputation in the US. Worked as a violin professor at the Innsbruck, Austria, conservatory from 1964 to 1970. After that, she played in the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, but was not comfortable with section work. Died a pauper aged 86 in 2002, only ten years after her mother, whose influence on her life she never managed to flee.
