Gustav Schauerte

German theologian, choir leader and composer, born August 11, 1876 in Lüdenscheid; died May 8, 1945 in Paderborn. He studied theology in Freiburg and Paderborn, where he became priest in 1901. He could gain a profession at the Hoher Dom Zu Paderborn in 1905, eventually became leader of the cathedrals' choir in 1907. At his time he worked for a renewal of sacral music, published songbooks and composed amongst others the "Liborlithurgie", which is until today often played in Paderborn cathedral. In 1926 he became professor and earned the title 'Monsignore'. In March 1945, the Cathedral was destroyed n the ongoing war, as well as Schauerte's home. Injuries caused by the bombardment led to Schauerte's death in May of that year. He was followed up by Hubert Göbel in his position.
