After separating himself musically from Willie Colón, Lavoe began his career as a solo singer, although he continued to receive the support of Colón, who began to produce some of his albums throughout his career. He also received support from his record label, the Fania label, who decided to launch his most successful solo singers. The orchestra that accompanied Héctor Lavoe in his stage as a soloist, was made up of almost the same members who played alongside him in previous years, in his stage with Willie Colón. To this orchestra, which only had two trombones (Ray Maldonado and Héctor Zarzuela) in the wind section, two trumpets (Tom Malon and José Rodríguez) were added. The pianist was Mark Dimond, while on the bass was Eddie "Guagua" Rivera. In the bongos, congas and timbales were José Mangual Jr., Milton Cardona and Nicky Marrero respectively. They participated in the debut album by Héctor Lavoe.
