American novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist (September 18, 1908, Indianapolis, USA - March 15, 1996). Courlander specialised in, among others, oral literature, cults, and Afro-American cultural connections with Africa. From 1947 to 1960, he served as a general editor of the Ethnic Folkways Library for Folkways Records.
