Harry Neve

Electronic and Rock

Harry Neve is an artist and musician currently based in Brighton. Harry’s career began in 1998 when he moved to London and formed the Trip Hop band “Anamorphic”. Anamorphic went on to secure a record deal with Barfly Record Label “Animal Noise”, release an EP entitled “The Engine House Sessions” and record the album “Hook” in Harry’s bedroom based studio. Unfortunately Anamorphic disbanded when the record label went bankrupt in 2002. In 2003, after travelling around Southern Africa Harry began a degree in Music and Visual Art at Brighton University. Whist at University Harry began working collaboratively as a sound artist with former Anamorphic band mate Marcus Woxneryd. Together they created “Terminal”, an interactive sound installation exhibited at the Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool St London in February 2005. They also began work on “The Sonicbody”, a project funded by “The Wellcome Trust“. Harry graduated from his degree in Music and Visual Art in 2006. His Degree show entitled “Residue” took the typical apparatus of a rock band and in removing the musicians revealed a hidden sonic landscape. It won an award and was later shown at “Deconstruction Reconstruction” organised by “Protoplay” at “The Fringe Basement”, Brighton June 2006. In 2007, Harry co-organised and performed at “Re-hash the Trash” part of the Brighton Fringe Festival. This was a night of rehashed culture and recycled physical detritus. Harry performed with his band “Django Spears” and also “The Jingle Hells“ and “The Skipit Quartet”. Also as part of The Brighton Fringe Festival Harry performed his piece entitled “DJ Detritus” at sound art event “The Art of Listening”. From this performance Harry was asked by sound artist Joseph Young to become a member of the Neo Futurist Collective, and collaborate upon the project “Reawakening of a city”, funded by the Arts Council England. Harry then completed “The Sonicbody” in collaboration with artists Thomas Machilack and Anna Orliac, funded by The Wellcome Trust. The Sonicbody was exhibited at Blank Studios, Brighton in November 2007 and later shown at ExpoCoruna, Spain in November 2008. Also in November 2007, using contact microphones to capture unusual sounds along Brighton’s seafront, Harry produced a 45 minute radio programme for “Field Radio” on Radio Reverb. In 2008 Harry began collaborating with fellow sound artist and musician Mikhail Karakis. Together they performed at “Gobsmacked“, an Orbit Music event at Bush Hall, London May 2008, and as part of the Neo Futurist Collective at the “Sonicarts Network Expo”, Brighton in July 2008. He also performed for “Scratch the Surface” at the Sallis Benny theatre, Brighton in May 2008. Alongside his sound art, Harry spent the summers of 2007 and 2008 playing festivals such as “The Big Chill” and “Bestival” as lead singer of his band “Django Spears”. In March 2009 Harry exhibited his sound installation entitled “Air Guitar” at the “Shunt lounge” in London. He also collaborated with Live art collectives “Protoplay” and “Non Grata” at the same four day event. In May 2009, Harry performed “DJ Detritus” at the “Sonic Art” exhibition, part of the Brighton Fringe Festival at Blank Studios, Brighton. Harry also performed all new material for a solo gig at the “Holmbush Records” launch party, Brighton on 26th May 2009 and at “Wattsfest” in July. Thus far in 2010 Harry and Julius Bangert have been performing regularly as, Talking Through a Slippa. TTAS have performed at The Fringe Basement Brighton, Phoenix Gallery Brighton and Wattfest 2010. Harry also performed his piece DJ Detritus at Wattsfest.
