Artist Portrait

Hathors

Band,
Alternative and Rock

The artwork tells you exactly what is inside and what you can expect. Full of contradictions, it fascinates and attracts attention. Absolute beauty is destroyed and wildly painted on. Colourful yet threateningly dark. Wild, untamed, aggressive and powerful… realism vs. art, popculture vs. undergound. That’s what HATHORS are musically. Contradictions on all levels. The opposite of streamlined, big melodies and catchy hooklines, but these get spit out and sawn in to pieces by guitars. Here, absolute beauty is destroyed and wildly played over. It smells of garage, rock, the primary punk and the grunge which could have arose from an Amphetamine Reptile or Subpop album. An old liaison, which is esthetic and musical, of an undeniable origin. It’s obvious that HATHORS don’t mean the bands which grace the t-shirts of H&M who became huge superstars. Despite rejection and their brittle appearance, the three Swiss know exactly what has to be done. As free and as undiscerning it may seem, you shouldn’t be fooled by the three likeable lads and should let them invite you for a „Pfeffi“. Alot is left to coincidence. DIY in a pure fashion. The band is internationally connected; German label, Swiss management, recordings in Brighton. hundreds of shows in Europe and at the big festivals worldwide. Like at the CMJ in New York, Eurockéennes, Montreux Jazz Festival, Wacken or Stoned From The Underground. And what you can expect on stage in a club is all clearly said by the eleven songs on the third album of HATHORS called „Panem Et Circenses“. There is no need to put down some info-verbiage to get things said which aren’t already said on the album. „The album is the first with Raphael on drums. Due to Raphael´s presence in the band, the songwriting has changed and become more efficient.“ Said Marc Bouffé. „In a trio all instruments are important and the drums take an important role therein. Compared to the past album, we recorded it pretty soon without rearranging the songs too much.“ „HATHORS’s musical evolution from the 2011 debut album „HATHORS“ and the 2014 „BRAINWASH“ leading to the current album „PANEM ET CIRCENSES“ mimics a pendular motion, which started off with a slightly uncoordinated movement and is now finding its middle.“ They have found each other. The love of detail mixes with spontaneity, the charm of the band never attenuates the anger and the energy. Multi layered song writing and a lot of variety distinguish the album, that not only quickly sweeps you away, but also affronts you. The band has also grown lyrically and has something to say. Just looking at the title shows you the direction. „Panem et circenses“ which is latin for „bread and games“. „Even today, the strategy of political or industrial leaders to distract the people by means of electoral gifts and impressively staged major events of economic or industrial problems“ Marc says about the title, „At the same time criticising a dull society whose interest does not go beyond elementary needs and low desires.“ And yet one does not want to be nailed here and see ones self as a political writer. Politically, socially critical statements are confronting gloomy stories about broken friendships, as well as "heart break can be an inspiration source". Thus in essence they are, realism vs art. Pop culture vs. underground.
