Singer / Composer / Conductor of Classical, Folk and World
Irish composer and conductor (1917–1996). Co-founder of the Dublin Orchestral Players in 1939, joined the BBC in Belfast in 1947 - and conducted the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra, the Studio Symphony Orchestra and the Ulster Singers. On his retirement in 1977 he went to Trinidad to direct a local opera company. Nelson's compositions included orchestral works, a ballet, a choral suite and many partsongs, anthems and (particularly) unison songs, song cycles and other solo songs, piano pieces, instrumental works, incidental music for films and radio and TV plays, and many arrangements of Irish and other folksongs.
