Artist Portrait

Headsnack

Composer / Producer of Hip-Hop/Rap
A.k.a. Phon-X

Headsnack is a positive-minded producer, composer, lyricist and DJ who specializes in hip-hop and electronic beat making. Hailing from metro New York, he is a strong supporter of artists who push the envelope by not adhering to rules or genres. This comes through in his song production, which mixes elements of hip-hop, rock, funk, jazz, and electronica, and which is a product of his love of all forms of music, from classical to country and everything in between. As a lyricist, Headsnack believes that artists need to use their voices to educate people, and he demonstrates that through his satirical writing style. He has been said to have his finger on the zeitgeist, as the topics of his most recent songs reveal. Internet privacy, consumerism, and factory farming have all felt Headsnack’s wrath and, he has proven that no subject is taboo. His style is laced with double entendres and punchlines that remind the listener of the pitfalls of technology and public policy while reinforcing that they shouldn’t take themselves or their lives too seriously. Headsnack’s music has been licensed to The Independent Film Channel, Akai, Guitar Center, DJ Lord (of Public Enemy), Eventide Audio, Graffiti Verite, Kaiju Big Battle, American Music Supply, Lickwood Labs Adult Films, and Slamjamz Records, and has been selected by super-producer Just Blaze (Jay-Z, Kanye West) to appear on the nationally-released compilation albums Fresh Cuts: Volumes 3 and 10. It can also be found on such sites and applications as Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud, YouTube, iStandardProducers, ReverbNation, and Rhapsody. Headsnack is proud of having performed as an opening act for such notable artists as Public Enemy, DJ/producer Prince Paul (De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Handsome Boy Modeling School), Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), Dilated Peoples, Blackalicious, The Sound of Urchin, and many of the finest groups of the NYC underground. He has also been a featured artist for American Music Supply’s “Catch a Break” series in which Adam Audio and Moog Music sponsored him, and is a featured artist on Eventide Audio’s website. Recording and performing under the moniker Phon-X, Headsnack is/was a founding member of the seminal underground hip-hop group, Regenerated Headpiece (RHP). Between the years 2001 and 2009, Regenerated Headpiece released three critically-acclaimed, full-length albums and played more than 100 dates. RHP’s unique music captured worldwide attention, garnering reviews and interviews in five languages. It also caught the ear of author Robert Lanham, who listed Regenerated Headpiece as a “Newer Band Kicking Some Ass This Decade” in his 2002 bestseller, The Hipster Handbook, alongside rising superstars EL-P (Run The Jewels), The White Stripes, and Ryan Adams. They’ve also had Chuck D of Public Enemy appear on two of their tracks, and were praised by the self-proclaimed “Dean of American Rock Critics,”Robert Christgau (Village Voice) in his 2009 consumer guide. Since transitioning away from RHP to focus more on solo projects, Headsnack has created some viral YouTube videos which have garnered over 100,000 views. He has also gained experience as a party DJ, spinning hip-hop, house, funk, rock, pop, R&B, and soul. In the past he’s held DJ residencies both in Manhattan and in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Headsnack also earned extensive knowledge of recording technology, keyboards, live sound, and DJ equipment through several years of working as the manager of Hi-Tech training for the world’s largest music retailer. Headsnack’s production influences range from DJ Premier, Rick Rubin, Q-Tip and Beck to Zero 7, the Alchemist and Dan the Automator. He is available for interviews and is actively seeking opportunities to license his music. Please contact mikefoam@headsnack.com with any inquiries.
