Album Cover
Henry Purcell, The Early Music Foundation, Michael Hauptmann, Ruth Kisch-Arndt
1658 Henry Purcell 1695

Album US 1950 on Renaissance label
Classical (Baroque)

The proper title of "Saul and the Witch at Endor is "In guilty night;" it, and "My song shall be alway [of the loving kindness of the Lord]" were both initially published in Playford's "Harmonia Sacra" (1693). "Bess of Bedlam" initially appeared in "Orpheus Britannicus" (1698). The frontispiece of the 1706 edition of "Orpheus Britannicus" is reproduced on the left half of the front cover of this album. This album was probably the first full-length LP devoted to the music of Henry Purcell. Ruth Kisch-Arndt is credited as the director of the Early Music Foundation itself; this organization has no relationship to the Early Music Foundation established by Frederick Renz in 1974. In the credits on the back cover underneath the titles, Kisch-Armdt's name is misspelled "Ruth Kisch-Arntd."
