Herman D. Gimbel

1913-1978 US

Herman Gimbel (Oct 23, 1913 - Sept 1978) was an American record distributor, label executive, and later owner of Audiofidelity Enterprises, Inc. home to Audio Fidelity Records. Herman entered into the music business, via way of record distribution, in 1949 courtesy of his friend, Harold Drayson. Harold was employed with MGM Records, and convinced Herman to become the Baltimore, MD distributor for MGM Records. Herman soon took on Richmond, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, as well. He grew his distribution company to the point that he began handling other labels, including Epic. Herman eventually closed his record distributorship, and began working with various record labels and companies, in a host of executive-related duties. He bought Audiofidelity Enterprises, Inc. (which included Audio Fidelity) in April 1964. He died September 1978 (age 64) .
