Hiroyuki Fujikake was born on January 31, 1949 in Gifu, Japan. In 1964, he started his musical studies at this city's Kano high school. Three years later, he graduated an went to the Aichi Prefectural Art College, where he took composition during four years, which culminated in a prize at Ongakunotomo's competition for his work "Two Poems For Chorus." A further three years were spent at a master course at the same college, at the end of which his composition "Threnody" won him a second prize at the NHK-Mainichi music competition. Fujikake won several other awards, culminating in the 1977 Grand Prix of the "Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Music Competition" for his symphonic work "The Rope Crest."
