Born in 1967 in Yamagata, Japan, Hiroyuki Yamamoto studied composition in Tokyo University of Arts with Jo Kondo and Isao Matsusita. After his graduation in 1990, he continued to the graduate school of the same university and completed his studies in 1992. He is the winner of several competitions, including the third prize of the 58th Japan Music Competition in 1989, the competition by Musica Practica in 1991 on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, and the prize of the 13th Competition of Japanese Society for Contemporary Music in 1996. He was also invited as the guest composer to Forum 91 in 1991 that was held by the University of Montréal. In 1994, his piece was selected by the International Gaudeamus Music Week ’94. In 1998, he won the third prize of BMW Musica Viva Competition Prize and the selected orchestral piece was performed by Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2000. Furthermore, he won the first prize of Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2002 and also the 13th Akutagawa Composition Prize in 2003 by his recent orchestral piece. He is the Associate Professor of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. Some of his pieces are published from M.A.P. Editions (milan).
