Holger Czukay

A.k.a. Holger Schüring

German musician, who studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen from 1963–1966, and in 1968 co-founded the German rock group Can, for whom he played bass guitar, as well as undertaking most of their recording and engineering. Czukay also recorded some early ambient albums, and was influential for his utilization of radio sounds and sampling. Though he identified himself as a German, and was a Germanophone, his country of birth was somewhat complicated. Danzig, up to 1918, had been part of the German Empire. However, after World War I it was placed under the protection of the League Of Nations as the 'Free City of Danzig'; neither part of Germany (Weimar Republic), nor of the newly independent Poland. By around 1935 it, though still officially controlled by the League, had fallen under the control of the Nazi Party, and at outbreak of World War II (and shortly after the birth of Schüring), was absorbed back into Germany. After the war Danzig was renamed Gdańsk, as it had been known in earlier times, and was annexed by Poland.
