Text (319 Pages) and Records (Seven-LP Set) combine to explore systematically the fundamentals of Music and their interrelationship within specifict works, developing and progressively refining Musical perception. The course begins with aspects of Music that might be related most readily to extramusical experience (Sound, Rhythm), and finally arrives at an integrated, in-depth concideration of complete movements. Musical terminology develops contextually. Sensitive to stylistic differences is build into a general development of aural acuity and is considered important in so far as it frees the student to hear each piece of musi in its own terms - to focus on the configuration particular to its unique process and structure. A brief historical view overview, with one period considered in depth, follows the musical analyses. Here, pertinent musical examples are examined in chronological sequence, and creteria of musical period and nationality of composer are compared. Harper And Row, publishers 49 East 33rd St., New York. 10016 ----------------------------------------------------- Text and Records / A unique introductory Music course (Review By: Alan Rich) "The authors have, probably, wisely, fudged the whole problem of translating music into words by providing along with their book a Seven-LP set of examples, to which teir text ralates cleanly and perceptively. I also admire their freedom from academic hangup in drawing musical examples from Rock and Folksongs as well as Bach. The book very nicely cuts across history in bearing down on the innards of musical style, leaving the listener free therafter to approach Music, any Music, with the equipment for bringing himself, at his own speed, into experience." ------------------------------------------------------ Original first pressing; was later re-released as a "Demonstration" record under the same label, Cat. No. # C 10679 Also, the book by the same title has been re-released several times over the years.
