A.k.a. Ian Stuart Cape

Ian started playing Percussion and performing in 1967. He joined the concert band at Carson Graham Senior Secondary in North Vancouver, B.C.. He played a variety of instruments from Tympani to Triangle, and also played in the school's “Pep Band” at athletic events. He joined up with other band members and did various gigs around Vancouver until moving to Toronto in 1975. He did not play much over the next 25 years, until he moved to Winnipeg in 2001. He married in 2005 and his new wife was very active in the local music scene, and he was gradually immersed once again in Music. The Bohdran (Irish Drum) became a favourite, and he learned to make and play his own Cajon's (wooden drum from South America). He was playing with a group ( “The Mathers Bay Melody Mates”) that played a variety folk style music for a couple of years. During that time, Ian became involved at the Grant & Wilton coffeehouse, performing in a group (Phil & Friends) that closed each coffeehouse, after the main act was finished. The group also played a variety of daytime concerts in hospitals and retirement homes. It was during this time that he was encouraged to start singing. Ian and his friend Michael, had been playing pool (Billiards) for a number of years before the conversation turned to music and they discovered they had more in common than they knew. They started jamming and that was the beginning of the band “ N Field, the band”. In the summer of 2015, on a dare from his wife, Ian wrote the lyrics and cadence for his first song “Thunder and Sun”. It was a musical tribute to those people, especially himself and his wife, who get together late in life. Michael and Ian collaborated on the music, and they performed it live on stage at the Grant and Wilton coffeehouse for Ian's 10th Anniversary that year. Michael posted the live version on YouTube and later created and posted a more polished video. Ian's second song and collaboration with Michael was a song inspired by a tolerance convention in Winnipeg, called “Blind Man”. Ian also sings bass harmony in this group. It was during this time that our friend TJ joined in, and the group officially became “N Field, the band”. Ian's wife had been playing with a local Irish band called “Celtic Seinn” and when it restructured, Ian accepted the position of Drummer. They are still active, playing a number of gigs each year, especially around St. Patrick's day. The repertoire covers traditional Irish ballads, Irish pop tunes and new Irish works by modern artists, as well as some down-eastern favorites.
