INaudible, also known as Collectif Inaudible, is a Belgian non-profit organization and collective of musicians, established by Guy Strale and Philippe Legris in 1976 at Palais Des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, and dedicated to promotion of free improvised music by organizing concerts and workshops, as well as releasing CDs through eponymous label. The original workshop was held with a monthly concert, featuring ascending new names together with most prominent players of the Brussels' burgeoning improvised scene. The founders of the collective saw free improvisation as the 'privileged way of musical expression, liberated by its very nature from any elitist, sexist or racist discrimination, academicism and aesthetic prejudice.' The collective is funded by Communauté Française De Belgique and other government and private foundations. In 1985, INaudible self-released their debut Musique Improvisée • Improvised Music album, a private LP press with hand-printed silkscreened sleeve, limited to a few hundred copies. The album showcased five years of collaborative improvisations. After hearing this record, Strale's long-time friend, vocalist Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg, decided to join the collective. He soon became one of the key figures at Inaudible, actively participating in workshops and frequently improvising in duo with Guy Strale. INaudible organized two large-scale festivals in 1985 and '86, and had been hosting a constantly growing number of concerts, improv sessions, rehearshals and recordings, until a more or less consistent line-up of musicians was formed by the mid-nineties. Since 1999, Inaudible has been regularly organizing workshops and live performances for local improvisers and visiting international artists in Brussels. In 2005, the collective presented Cardo, a joint release by Emanem and Inaudible (2) labels, that featured twelve duo, trio and quartet improvisations recorded by INaudible members since 2001. The album includes studio and live performances and focuses on the creative process at Inaudible, demonstrating various smaller groups within the collective (both long-standing and spontaneously organized). Some of CARDO groups had been rehearsing regularly, such as the trio of frequent partners Jan Huib Nas and Adelheid Sieuw joined by Guy Strale, which recorded Festina Lente and Strasina tracks; the tandem of Guy Strale with Jean-Jacques Duerinckx on saxophone (featured on Vents Croisés and Dans La Courbure Du Temps) and Dévoyés vocal duo trained for many months. One-off collaborations on the album include an ensemble behind 10-min closing track 120 Grande Rue Au Bois, which only met in the studio once, as well as Laffut-Demey Yem Tuf duet and banjo-voice combo on Sayonara – both suggested by the concert curator. The string quartet on Sur Le Fil, which debuted on CARDO, eventually started performing on a regular basis as Inaudible String Band. The album also captured three first-time ever improvising performances by film-maker Mara Pigeon, singer Nicole Legros and electro-acoustic composer/musician Roald Baudoux.
