Musician of Rock and R&B/Soul
American saxophone player. JJ Byars fashions lush and dynamic indie electric folk that explores a wide palette from the gritty, driving, energetic, to the sensitive, bare and introspective. With narratives of love, loss, and restlessness, there is also humor there amidst the nostalgia. Influenced by artists such as Grizzly Bear, John Fahey, and Jeff Buckley, JJ’s approach to songwriting is unique. “Waterlogged” is his solo album debut and first foray as a singer songwriter/composer under his own name. He comes from years of touring as a founding member and saxophone player for the successful soul rock band, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds. And has been an active sideman and bandleader in the NYC music scene for multiple projects. He also leads the rock band Hungry Hands which recently had music placed in the new Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game. You can find him currently playing with bands: Kim Anderson, MAGANA, Glowalker, Johnny Butler, and collaborating with Jonathan Smith (The Can't Tells) and Kellen Harrison (Hurray for the Riff Raff, Wilde Belle).
