b.: 1892 (New York City, New York, U.S.) d.: March 23, 1979 (Hollywood, Florida, U.S.) American composer and founder of the Mills Music Publishing Company (named later on Mills Music Inc.), who introduced many popular songs over a 50‐year span. He was the brother of Irving Mills. Mills got his big break in 1921 when the tenor Enrico Caruso died. He heard an unknown songwriter's composition called “They Needed a Songbird in Heaven, So God Took Caruso Away.” Mills published the song on his own. Before his retirement in 1965, Mr. Mills sold his company for $5 million.
