Country, Folk, World and Soundtrack
Jack Pennington was a fiddler from Alabama who settled in Memphis in the 1930s. In the early 40s took over the band of Hal Byrnes, and although they never recorded commercially, they did make quite a few transcriptions. They perform a mixture of western songs, western swing, sentimental songs and gospel, most of it sung in excellent three part harmony by Pennington, guitarist Sonny Haley, and bassist Lonnie Love. The group is rounded out by steel guitarist Johnny Sorrels. Tight harmony singing and virtuoso musicianship (mainly fiddle, guitar, steel) from this Memphis-based group, mix of country, western, folk, all from transcription discs cut for Lang-Worth in the 1940s. Also called Jack Pennington and The Garrett's Snuff Variety Gang.
