Jack Tamul

syn, *1948 US, Providence, Rhode Island
Electronic

Jack Tamul (1948, Providence, Rhode Island) attended Boston's Berklee College of Music and Jacksonville University, where he graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Music in composition and theory. A post-graduate scholarship and grant to study composition lured him to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland in 1972 under Einojuhani Rautavaara. Concurrently, he was hired by the Finnish Radio Electronic Music Studio to compose pieces for broadcast. On his return to the U.S., Tamul worked on electronic soundtracks for several films sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and PBS. Tamul has received commissions for orchestra, dance theatre, film and multi-media, including works for the Sinking Creek Film Festival, Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Jackson Ballet Theatre, and Florida and Tennessee Fine Arts Councils. His strong interest in social issues and interpreting life sounds have spawned such projects as Porpoises: Betty & Eva (cable-cast on Cinemax and HBO), Come to Florida Before It's Gone (aired on PBS), A Child for Our Time (a birthing), Genesis (exploring the creation of the universe), and The Parthenon (using natural structure sounds). Jack Tamul performs as a solo artist, and with the Jack Tamul Ensemble, at contemporary music festivals, museums and colleges. (Biographical notes from "The Referee Has Vanished" 1986)
