Very little documentation exists on Jan Leef´s life and career. “Jan Leef” is probably a stage name he used when he privately released his one and only LP “We Will Survive” in 1972 on Gypsy Sound, a label established to the occasion. Very few copies were released (estimated to 200, “Rare Danish Records 1958 - 1977 - Inspiration and Priceguide” by Jan Rørbæk) and they never came out in regular record stores. Most of the copies were probably given away to friends and family members. His music is described as downer loner folk-psychedelica and some even compares Jan Leef with contempoary Nick Drake. No records are available on the web about any live events where Leef has performed his songs from 1972. “We Will Survive” has never been repressed although Jan Leef has been approached recently by interested people. According to rumors “Jan Leef” is still an active composer, but details are blurred and unconfirmed leaving the same mysterious aura around this unique artist which, maybe accidentally, made a little rough diamond unknovn to even hard core folk connoisseurs. Recent sale of his record came as high as to 800€, which is remarkable given the fact that Jan Leef is still unknown to the large mayority of the folk community as no copies of his LP are available.
