Jason Greenly grew up in Eagan, Minnesota and spent his youth playing bass in Minneapolis metalcore band Get Young. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2009, Greenly joined Lightsystem and carried on as a bassist. In 2013, Greenly formed another band, Ass Life, based on 3 demos he had written and recorded. Recruiting guitarist Andy Hill, bassist Chad Fjerstad, and drummer John Kyle (who also drummed in Lightsystem), Greenly would then serve as the band's lead vocalist/frontman.
