Co-founder of Uncle Tupelo with Jeff Tweedy, Jay Farrar left in 1993 (causing the band to dissolve) to form Son Volt. Following three albums with Son Volt Jay concentrated on his solo career, but in 2005 he reformed Son Volt with a new lineup.
